Oil Paintings by Vicki Ingham
Self Portrait in the Renaissance Style
2008

Inspired by Piero della Francesca's portrait of Battista Sforza (1465), I set up my camera and did a timed exposure of myself wearing a vintage dress and hat. For the landscape in the distance, I drew on my photos of the landscape around Poggiarellino, a farm near Buonconvento in Tuscany.

Some of the best-known early artists' self portraits are those of Rembrandt and Durer, who painted themselves many times over the course of their careers. Artist self-portraiture marked a growing sense of the artist as something more than a craftsman and asserted the artist's sense of self.
