Still lifes are a good way to practice observing and attempting to capture the play of light on various textures and surfaces. For the 17th-century Dutch painters, they were also a way to comment on culture and morality, with symbols of virtue and vice, references to the brevity of life, and celebrations of new scientific knowledge. None of those layers here, just an effort to get at the shine of porcelain and pearls.
